Unexpectedly interrupted

Our little Jasper is going deaf in his old age, bless him. The other day, on our return from a quick trip out, he didn’t hear our car pull up in the driveway. Nor did he hear the key in the lock,.. or the front door opening! I think he’s going to have to hang up his guard dog hat soon.
We went through to the living room, where he had his back to the door and he was very busily sorting out the sofa after pesky humans had been sitting on it and it needed re-doggifying. As soon as I spoke to him, the poor little love jumped out of his skin and spun round with a guilty expression on his face!
In case you’re confused by the accompanying illustration, okay it may be just ever so slightly an exaggeration of what we saw when we walked in…

Bruised ego

Last night, Jasper subtley let me know that he was desperate to go outside, by doing his obligatory spaniel spins. Although I'm unsure of exactly how the following events were triggered, I'm pretty certain that it was caused by one of two things:
1) Jasper had completely forgotten that we’ve had heavy snow,Or2) He was unaware that last night it had finally started to thaw slightly, causing a slippery patch outside the door.

Whichever it was, there was no question of what followed….
Having gained impressive speed from his spaniel spinning, as soon as the door was opened, he launched like a catapult out of the door, immediately slipped, and went stump over ridiculous ears, legs akimbo, with a startled yelp.
Back to uncertainties, I’m afraid my memory is hazy as to whether I laughed heartlessly BEFORE or AFTER checking that he was unhurt. Thankfully the only injury was a bruised ego. Phew!
